That last post actually reminded me though: Apparently, in the Japanese
version of DMC4, when Dante does his taunt with Yamato, he says “Let’s
switch, Vergil”

Which leads me to believe that Vergil is
actually somewhere inside Yamato in spirit form (Devil Arm style), and
might be able to possess Dante or something??

Idk??

But these two??

[Reference: here at around 4:24]

It’s canon that Vergil & Dante are one.

It’s said in the manga that they are “one soul split in two”, therefore, it’s no wonder that one would always carry the other, somehow. Perhaps literally – Dante holds Vergil’s slice of soul inside of himself after Mallet Island. Maybe it’s that, the first one who dies, is assimilated by the other in some way to compensate the fact that both are just pieces.

Where in the world did you get that interpretation?

Rabbit : The two sons, who were meant to be one. The one key, which is now two. Since you were born as two, everything has been divided between you. Identical faces. Identical powers. Sparda’s powers have indeed been divided between you two.

(Vergil puts his hand on the hilt of Yamato.)

Vergil : Are you trying to say that I’m only half a man?

Rabbit : No. I’m saying that you and Dante need each other.

They’re not one soul split into two. (Vergil literally asks if he’s only half, right there, and the rabbit says no.) The rabbit says the key, the physical appearance, and powers, are divided between them. Otherwise they are still whole individuals with whole souls, not half a person/half-souled.

and also Dante’s taunt is  借りるぞ、バージル As in “Let me borrow this for a bit, Vergil.” not “Let’s switch”.

What he’s saying is “kaete, Vergil”, which is “Let’s switch”.
