Boy I sure love wondering how to portray third person limited with a character who thinks they can’t feel and then just straight up giving up cause Roxas was running in too much emotion to stop and wonder why he’s feeling all these things so it doesn’t really matter

If it makes you feel better I find people really suck at writing emotionless characters in general. Mostly cause A. Most people are pretty emotion based and don’t know how the frick not to be so how the frick are they gonna write a character who feels nothing at all in a legit way B. A truly emotionless character would be the most deadpan, boring thing ever so most people give them a little bit of emotion for that reason alone.

This is true of Kingdom Hearts seeing as most of the Org members display at least some basic emotion.

Also when it comes to Roxas, I like to think that it’s one of those things where you’re so stuck in your own head that you don’t know any different. Like no one ever sat Roxas down and told him what feeling was like (at least not in great detail) and only that he didn’t have any so anything he did feel was written off as not feeling because he didn’t realize what it was. Basically he had no reference point.

And the few times he does say he feels something it’s usually written off. Like the scene where he tells Axel he was worried about him only for Axel to remind him that he doesn’t have a heart and shouldn’t be able to worry.

I know this headcanon has a few holes in it but it’s the best way I can think to rationalize Roxas not realizing that he has a heart despite all the emotion he obviously feels.

OH OH, I use it for writing Nobodies as well as other ‘emotionless’ characters… there’s a chart that shows where people “feel” certain emotions in their body, and how they feel. i.e. Anger is bright and hot and it fills your chest and mouth and creeps down your arms into your hands, Happiness fills your entire body with bubbly warmth, etc.

basically I use that as a reference and instead of saying like… they felt Sad, describe how the image of sadness looks and feels. a cold, hollow feeling, with dull, sluggish pain in your chest and throat.

EDIT: I ACTUALLY PULLED THIS INTO A LEGIT POST TO SHARE THE CHART!

But they wouldn’t have that because they don’t feel anything. Everything would be numb 24/7. They have no emotion and therefore anything caused by feeling emotion wouldn’t happen.

I mean if their brain and physiological responses were enough then why would they bother trying getting their hearts back.

I haven’t written for KH in ages (and when I did I was a lot less experienced) but if I was to go back now I’d write it where I’d explain what they’re feeling but never name it (because they do actually feel things they just don’t know it because they’re told they don’t have it). They are however allowed to have likes and dislikes (because that isn’t emotion? Look the Org logic isn’t the most sound thing).

So for fear (which, okay, is probably the easiest) play it as “he doesn’t want this to happen”. We as people with working emotional understanding know the reason why we don’t want that to happen is because we fear it – they don’t have that working emotional understanding don’t so instead all they know is the REALLY don’t want x to happen without understanding the emotion underpinning it.

Happiness would be wanting to stay in that moment – again not understanding why. And so on.

Honestly I think the best way is just to use third person limited viewpoint.

Cause while the Nobodies might not feel anything (with the exception of Roxas, Axel and Xion it’s debatable which members grew their hearts back and which didn’t) they act like it.

So for example

“They smiled”, “They shrugged”, “Their eyes narrowed”, “They laughed”, “Tch, are you serious”, “They shivered”.

While none of these emotions may be felt the Nobody knows they should be feeling them and then acts accordingly.

It’s the ancient rule of show don’t tell.

If you have to protray someone’s complete thought process…I guess just focus on the inner monologue and try to downplay the amount of emotion words you use.

“Zexion thought Demyx was a bit odd. While he could be quite competent in his work; he preferred to laze around with his sitar all day. Zexion found this to be a complete waste of time and would occansionally shoot him dirty looks from across the room”

^I portrayed Zexion being both annoyed and confused without actually saying he felt those two things

Basically what you more or less said about explaining the feeling without actually naming it.

Also tbf with the exception of Roxas and Xion they do remember what it’s like to have emotions so it’s inaccurate to say they don’t have the emotional understanding. It’s more correct to say some of them are in big time denial about feeling said emotion.

Fun observation-

In the concept ‘Birth by Sleep’ trailer, Terra, Aqua and Ven each pick up a keyblade.

If you think about it in hindsight, they picked the ones showing where they ended up.

Terra picked up the Kingdom Key, a light realm keyblade: At the end of BBS he was left in the light realm as Xehanort.

Aqua picked up the Kingdom Key D, a dark realm keyblade: She ended up in the realm of darkness.

Ven picked up Riku’s Way to Dawn, which is also a light realm keyblade but it represents Riku’s in-between nature: Ventus found himself sleeping in Castle Oblivion which is between the realms of light and dark.

#this is ADHD#or possibly another executive function disorder but ADHD is the only one I really know about#the reason for this is an ADHD brain does not have an internal feedback system#ADHD brains require external input to make up for missing executive functions#like the ability to process multi-step tasks with delayed consequences#because to an ADHD brain#things don’t exist in the absence of consequences#meaning#people with ADHD are drawn to things like video games because the feedback is external and immediate#every action you take has an immediate effect on the game environment#and you can SEE that your actions are providing xp or moving a task towards completion#but for something like homework#the consequences of that homework being done do not exist until that homework must be turned in#and it’s either done or not done at that point#which is why people with ADHD function best closest to deadlines#the consequences of that work being done must be IMMEDIATE to compel the brain to see it as a task that requires completion#because the further out a task is from the consequences of it being done#the more an ADHD brain is incapable of acknowledging it#TASKS DO NOT EXIST TO YOU UNLESS THERE IS IMMEDIATE EXTERNAL FEEDBACK#THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS WITH ADHD BECAUSE TO OTHER PEOPLE IT DOES LOOK LIKE LAZINESS#BUT A LAZY PERSON JUST WOULDN’T DO THE TASK AT ALL#AND ADHD PERSON STRESSES THEMSELVES HALF TO DEATH TO GET THINGS DONE#BUT ISN’T CAPABLE OF STARTING THEM EARLIER TO PREVENT THE STRESS#BECAUSE THE TASK DOES NOT EXIST UNTIL IT NEEDS TO BE EITHER DONE OR NOT DONE#IT’S KIND OF LIKE SCHRODINGER’S BOX#THE TASK DOESN’T HAVE TO BE DONE OR NOT DONE UNTIL THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES FOR ITS STATE OF COMPLETION#so what LOOKS like laziness to other people#is actually a VERY SERIOUS FAILURE of the brain’s executive function system#which is a VERY serious medical problem#the name ‘Attention Deficit Disorder’ really fails to sell how serious the disorder actually is via @thecuckoohaslanded

god dammit my tags got cut off AGAIN I’m hitting the tag limit on like every post lately, I really need to work on that

Anyway I went on to say that there are 5 major executive functions of the human brain.  These are the ‘higher functions’ that really distinguish between a human brain and that of any other animal.  We have added intelligence on top of that, but these are the functional abilities our brains have that the rest of the animal kingdom does not have on a a structural level.  There are 5 of them.  ADHD affects all 5.  And none of them are actually ‘attention’ (the closest function to anything that can reasonably be called ‘attention’ is what’s called Working Memory, which is your brain’s ability to hold a specific task in mind to come back to it; distractions are inevitable, but a healthy brain will hear a phone ring, look up, and remember to go back to what it was doing before.  An ADHD brain will hear the phone riBANG ALL MEMORY OF THE CURRENT TASK IS GONE.  ADHD brain looks up, sees the name on the caller id, oh it’s an unknown number, oh it’s probably some political pollster, oh man this year’s election is just awful I can’t believe people are supporting that angry cheeto. Oh cheetos I’m hungry I should go make a snack.  What kind of snacks do we have?  Did I remember to buy cereal at the store the other day?  What about dog food?  Oh my god I forgot to let the dog back in the house this is why I should have gotten a cat.  Oh my friend sent me a great cat video earlier I should watch that.  AND GUESS WHAT YOU NEVER GO BACK TO WHAT YOU WERE DOING BECAUSE THE STRUCTURE IN YOUR BRAIN THAT SUPPORTS RETURNING TO A PARTIALLY COMPETED TASK DOES NOT EXIST THE WAY IT DOES FOR A NORMAL HEALTHY BRAIN.  This is why even if you start a task well before a deadline you can’t keep to it until it’s been completed; the consequences of it being done MUST be more compelling than everything else in the immediate environment for the brain to see it.  No matter how much time you give yourself to complete the task, if you have ADHD it will take you 100% of that time, every time, which is why having ADHD actually TEACHES YOU to put things off, because it’s the only way to shorten the total time actually spent completing the task – the disorder rewards you for self-destructive behavior because it’s the only way you can get things done at all, and you end up living in a permanent state of extreme stress, hopping from one emergency deadline to the next even though you hate yourself for it every single time).  The disorder has been horribly named in a way that trivializes just how serious and life-ruining it actually is.

ADHD is a very, very serious disorder and the pop psych/common understanding of it makes it seem HORRIBLY trivial compared to the real damage it actually does to people’s lives.

Well damn….. this makes sense.
